We knew Mad Dukes founder and primary songwriter Kim Simpson years ago when he was active in the Salt Lake City music scene. We also knew that Kim, who relocated to Austin in 1993, had been playing with different incarnations of the Mad Dukes ever since. Seems like every time we heard the MD's they not only had a completely new line up (except for Kim), but they also sounded completely different. This was no big surprise because we were well aware of Kim's capricious tastes in music as well as his notorious creative ADD when it came to making music of his own. In describing him, we'd use the word “difficult” if he weren't such a nice guy.

When we created RiPPYFiSH, we knew better than to recruit the unpredictable likes of him and his revolving door Mad Dukes as flagship artists. But gamblers that we are, we've done exactly that. Sure, we would have liked to have launched the label with a group of young and pliable musicians who wrote songs that all sounded like they came from the same band. But we simply enjoyed the eclectic album this latest incarnation of the Mad Dukes came up with so much that we couldn't resist the urge to promote it.
